The Senate of the Kiel University of Applied Sciences has determined the following research priorities the Kiel University of Applied Sciences will focus on in future.
1. Challenges and chances of the demographic change
The demographic change poses great challenges to the society. The main issue is the aging population bringing with it a shifting of age groups. At this stage, various faculties of the Kiel University of Applied Sciences are engaged in the pursuit of this issue in several areas.
2. Change towards a society being obliged to sustainability
The Kiel University of Applied Sciences is long since busy with the development towards a more sustainable society. Sustainable behaviour is not limited to using renewable energies but requires a basically resource-saving behavior of individuals and enterprises. Therefore, the Kiel University of Applied Sciences is comitted in several subject fields to promote a corresponding change of thinking patterns.
3. Mechatronics and power electronics
Power electronics and mechatronics play a key role in coping with future challenges for example in the field of electromobility or wind energy. The ability to use electrical power efficiently is a major asset of our society. In order to cope with the challenges resulting from resource scarcity and environment protection, subsequent generations of engineers shall need outstanding qualifications to ensure creative and responsible use of electricity. This competence can be applied to design competitive products and employ competitive techniques and ultimately develop a sustainable and clean mobility. We will continue to enhance knowledge generated at the Kiel University of Applied Sciences.
4. Science communication
The “Mediendom” of the Zentrum für Kultur- und Wissenschaftskommunikation (Centre for Culture and Science Communication) provides a research laboratory where testing and application of 360° projections can be conducted. One main research field are immersive media.
The Centre for Culture and Science Communication is working together with the faculty of new media, which is also focussing on the research topic of immersive media and has clustered his competences in the "institute of immersive media". Furthermore, the Faculty of Media aims to scientifically support the development of new media and the impact on individuals and society.
5. Marine and offshore technology
At the Kiel University of Applied Sciences, the Yacht Research Unit (YRU) operates a twist-flow wind channel to conduct R&D tasks aiming to optimise sailing yachts. Furthermore, we are researching in the subject area of hydrodynamic simulation. In addition, a ship model basin provides another test laboratory to conduct marine research. Further research topics are the development and testing of sail propulsions and offshore systems. In the area of offshore systems we can benefit from the research platform FINO 3 of the Forschungs- und Entwicklungszentrum FH Kiel GmbH (research and development centre Kiel University of Applied Sciences GmbH).
Digitalisation will change society and economy. The Kiel University of Applied Sciences wants to contribute to this transition. Its Research Priority 6 approaches this range of topics from an interdisciplinary point of view. Creating a digital factory is a first specific project the Faculties Computer Science and Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Media, and Business Management contribute to.
